Our Club Leaders

Construction Club Melbourne is led by experienced Speech Pathologists, Helen Eldershaw & Bec Taylor, who bring over 20 years of combined experience working with children and teens plus their own lived experience of neurodivergence. They are passionate about creating an environment where children feel a sense of belonging and pride and showing their families what they can achieve too!

Personalised

Each child begins with an individual assessment session before being placed into a small LEGO® group of two to four peers. Groups are matched carefully so that children connect with like-minded peers and feel comfortable. This tailored approach creates a supportive, neurodiversity-affirming environment where children can form friendships, practise collaboration, and strengthen communication in ways that feel natural and engaging.

Practical

Construction Club uses structured LEGO® play to support connection and communication in real social settings. Guided by a Speech Pathologist, children practise turn-taking, negotiation, and teamwork in a way that feels fun and low-pressure. Through play, children gain confidence and learn to navigate everyday interactions while building friendships and a sense of belonging.

Neuro-Affirming Therapy

Every child’s unique strengths and communication style are respected. By using shared interests such as LEGO®, we create opportunities for genuine peer connection, self-expression in a safe and inclusive setting, and confidence through teamwork and belonging. Our focus is on self-advocacy, collaboration, and connection. Groups are structured, small, and led by experienced speech pathologists.

Supported

Each group is led by a qualified Speech Pathologist who adapts supports to each child’s needs. We use visual schedules, language visual supports, and sensory-friendly tools to help children feel secure and supported.

Because sessions run in real time with peers, children receive immediate guidance and feedback while navigating authentic interactions. This helps them participate with confidence and build genuine peer connections.

THERAPY COSTS

  • Our groups are perfect for school-aged kids, ages 4 and up, including teen programs. Not sure if it’s the right fit? Reach out — we’re always happy to chat about your child’s unique needs.

  • Easy! Just fill out our Enquiry Form & we’ll be in touch to talk through your child’s needs & our next available sessions. We can’t wait to meet you.

  • If your child doesn’t currently have an interest in LEGO but you are interested in our approach, we’d still love to chat! We bring lots of other themes into the LEGO-based activities and for that reason it can appeal to a wide variety of interests.

  • Construction Club is for children and teens aged 4–18 with a variety of communication styles and needs. It’s especially suited for kids who:

    ●      Want to connect with like-minded peers and build friendships

    ●      Need support with functional communication (e.g. negotiation, sharing, perspective-taking)

    ●      Are working on language goals (e.g. following instructions, making sentences, vocabulary)

    ●      Benefit from extra support with confidence, self-advocacy, or emotional awareness

  • Every session includes both structured and unstructured play so children can connect in different ways. A typical session might include:

    ●      Natural, supported opportunities to connect through free LEGO® play

    ●      Structured, role-based team LEGO® building

    ●      Creative team LEGO® projects

    ●      Reflection & parent show and tell

    ●      We also mix in fun extras like games or making stop-motion LEGO® animation videos – all with purposeful communication goals embedded.

  • Construction Club is effective because it’s:

    ●      Interest-based → using LEGO® as a motivating and enjoyable focus

    ●      Play-based → learning happens naturally through play

    ●      Functional → children practise skills that matter in everyday life

    ●      Flexible → sessions vary in structure, challenge, and complexity to match each child’s needs

    ●      Strengths-based → we celebrate what each child brings and build on it

    ●      Small-group → groups of 2–4 mean activities can be personalised and every child has space to shine

It’s play with a powerful purpose.

  • Children practise a wide range of communication and life skills in a natural way, such as:

    ●      Negotiation, fairness, perspective-taking, and problem-solving

    ●      Finding connections with peers

    ●      Emotional vocabulary and self-advocacy

    ●      Organisation, planning and time management

    ●      Combining and executing ideas in a group

    ●      Receptive and expressive language in context

    ●      Self-expression and sharing ideas

  • We welcome families into the club atmosphere and have a strong sense of community: our current locations have outdoor spaces for carers and siblings to hang out!

During the sessions themselves, we like to keep this a child-only space, so they can develop their sense of ownership and independence. Families join at the end of each sessions for a show & tell.
